Why Rent This

Croatian coastal events have a logistics problem that does not show up in a spec sheet: getting the equipment to the venue. A lot of the best locations along the Dalmatian coast — island coves, cliffside villas, boats at anchor, beaches reached on foot — have no vehicle access at the last stage. Every kilogram is carried.

The Mix is the answer to that. At 9.7 kg against the Soundboks 4’s 16.1 kg it changes what a single person can move in one trip, which in practice means fewer crew, fewer journeys, and less risk of a drop on a wet rock or a boat ladder. It gives up 5 dB of maximum output for that, which is real but rarely decisive for the crowd sizes these venues actually hold.

The 40-hour battery is the same platform as the larger model, and the pack is swappable, so a long day never depends on finding an outlet. For boat parties in particular this combination — light, loud, battery-only, salt-tolerant — is difficult to match with anything else in our inventory.

Technical Deep Dive

The Soundboks Mix uses a two-driver configuration: a single 10-inch woofer and a 1.2-inch dome tweeter, covering an effective range of 40 Hz to 20 kHz — the same stated frequency range as the larger Soundboks 4. Two Texas Instruments 72 W RMS Class D amplifiers run in PBTL mode to drive it, producing a maximum sound pressure level of 121 dB. The 5 dB gap to the Soundboks 4 comes down to driver count: one woofer instead of two.

The battery is the same 12.8 V, 7.8 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) pack used across the current range, rated at 99.84 Wh. Soundboks quotes 40 hours at mid volume and 8 hours at full output — notably better at full tilt than the larger model’s 6 hours, because there is less amplifier to feed. A full recharge takes about 2 hours on standard Croatian 230 V / 50 Hz mains. The pack is removable, so we can supply a charged spare for long events.

Physically it measures roughly 48.5 x 34 x 27.4 cm and weighs 9.7 kg. That is the whole point of the model. It fits in a car boot alongside luggage, sits on a boat’s bench seat without dominating it, and can be carried one-handed by its top handle across an uneven beach.

Connectivity is where the Mix is most clearly the junior model. It runs Bluetooth 4.2 rather than the Soundboks 4’s Bluetooth 5.0, and it offers a single 3.5 mm TRS stereo input with no XLR or 6.3 mm connectors. In practice Bluetooth 4.2 is perfectly stable for phone playback at normal outdoor distances, but there is no way to plug in a microphone without an external mixer. If the event needs a microphone, this is the wrong speaker.

As with the rest of the range, Soundboks specifies an IP65-rated electronics coating rather than a fully sealed IP65 enclosure. The internal electronics are protected against dust and water jets, which is why the speaker tolerates salt spray, sand, splashes and rain on a Croatian beach or an open deck. It is not a waterproof box — do not submerge it. We rinse the exterior with fresh water after every salt-heavy coastal event.

Multi-speaker linking uses SKAA TeamUP, supporting up to five units in a synchronised group, managed from the Soundboks app. The app also provides custom EQ, adaptive sound profiles for different spaces, PIN locking, and remote power-off.

Setup and Operation Guide

The Soundboks Mix requires no setup beyond placing it and pairing. Power on with the rear switch, enable Bluetooth on your phone, select the speaker, and play.

The 3.5 mm input provides a wired connection where Bluetooth is unreliable or where a DJ controller needs a direct feed. The cable is not included in the rental but is available on request.

For TeamUP setups, power on all units and link them in the Soundboks app. Place speakers 10-20 metres apart for even coverage of a larger area. Elevating each unit on a table or platform improves dispersion over standing guests.

On a boat, place the Mix on a flat surface away from direct spray and secure it against movement — 9.7 kg slides on a wet deck under way. On a beach, firm ground or a table is better than loose sand, though sand ingress is not a problem for the unit itself. On exposed coastal locations where the Bura is a factor, the lighter weight means less inherent stability than the larger model, so brace it or place it low and out of the wind.

Start at moderate volume and increase as the event builds. Battery life improves substantially at lower volumes, and the speaker sounds cleaner well short of its ceiling.

Venue and Event Planning Guide

The Mix is aimed at the Croatian coastal events where access, not audience size, is the limiting factor. Typical deployments include day-cruise party boats out of Split, island coves on Hvar, Brac and Vis, villa terraces reached by staircase, and welcome drinks at harbour-side locations.

For a boat party, one Mix covers a typical charter group of 15-40 guests comfortably. Catamarans and larger motor yachts with separate fore and aft social areas benefit from two units in TeamUP, one per zone, which also removes the need to run any cable along a deck.

For beach events, one unit covers a gathering of up to about 60 guests. Beach acoustics are forgiving — no walls, no reflections — so the sound stays clean and direct. Above 60 guests, either move to the Soundboks 4 or add a second Mix in TeamUP.

For villa and pool events, place the speaker at a point central to the guest area. The dispersion is wide enough to cover a typical terrace without precise aiming.

For ferry transport to island venues, this is the easiest audio item in our inventory to move. One person carries it from vehicle to ferry to venue with a free hand for everything else.

How It Compares

Against the Soundboks 4, the Mix trades output and connectivity for weight. The 4 is louder (126 dB against 121 dB), has two woofers instead of one, runs Bluetooth 5.0 instead of 4.2, and carries the Pro Panel with two XLR / 6.3 mm combo inputs for microphones and instruments. The Mix has none of that, and weighs 9.7 kg against 16.1 kg. Choose the 4 when the event needs a microphone or the crowd is above roughly 60 guests. Choose the Mix when the carry is the hard part.

Against the Bose S1 Pro Plus, the Mix is considerably louder — 121 dB against 109 dB — and better suited to outdoor party playback, but the Bose is lighter again at 5.5 kg, sounds more refined at conversational volumes, and takes a microphone directly.
